Iconic Coonawarra producer Penley Estate has seen a radical facelift since the arrival of highly acclaimed [ex-Yarra Valley] winemaker Kate Goodman. She not only is responsible for the more ‘contemporary’ winemaking approach but to a large degree is also directing marketing decisions to a stunning effect. The ’new’ Penley Estate is all about creativity [as the labels testify], enlivening and surprising what wine lovers usually think about what can be achieved in Coonawarra. 

Distinctly regional on the nose showing classic Coonawarra notes of blackcurrant, cigar box, scorched earth and subtle whiffs of dried herbs and choc/mint. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lashings of flavour yet there is a sense of control and freshness with chalky tannins and lovely cedar oak making a presence through the finish, adding the structure that will see this wine age for at least another decade. 

Kate is a great winemaker, and this is an incredibly good value cabernet sauvignon.
